York University’s Keele Campus offers a large-scale campus experience to over 52,000 students. York’s other campuses include the Markham campus, which opens in October 2024, and the Glendon campus. The Glendon campus is a gem that offers small classes in a bilingual (English and French) environment. I recently recommended it to a student interested in international relations. A free shuttle connects the three campuses.

York’s Keele Campus offers a wide array of programs: Programs available at Keele Campus.
The Keele campus library has 2.5 million books. In addition, it has an interlibrary loan system with other universities in Ontario.
York University Admissions
York has a transparent interactive tool to match your curriculum (e.g., US high school) against admission requirements for majors: https://futurestudents.yorku.ca/requirements.
Prospective students submit applications through:
the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) application, or
Students can switch majors after admission, but students find it challenging to switch into business.
Applicants who do not meet the minimum admission requirements can complete the extenuating circumstances form to explain such things as an undiagnosed disability.
While York University offers test-optional admissions, it is not test-optional for home-schooled students.
York University Affordability
Tuition depends on your nationality and program of study, but international students can expect to pay $35 K to $40 K. For more information:
York awards 20 international students a year a scholarship, which is valued at $180,000 ($45,000 x four years). These awards are called the President's International Scholarships of Excellence, and they are awarded to applicants who demonstrate academic excellence, commitment to volunteer work and extracurriculars, and leadership skills. Recipients represent a variety of regions around the world.
Some scholarships are not renewable, so read the fine print for any scholarships.
York University Students
York University students tend to be progressive. Their interests might include social justice, DEI, and the environment.
There are around 10,000 international students. Many students are from India, but my tour guides were from Mexico and Dubai. International students must go through an involved immigration process to study in Canada. You can find the requirements for international students here: https://yorkinternational.yorku.ca/study-permit-faqs/.
York University Housing And Food
York provides dormitories for undergraduate students, but most York students live off campus. Ontario residents receive a housing preference, but both of my international tour guides lived on campus. Some housing is reserved for graduate students and students who are at least 21. The housing for older students tends to be apartment- and suite-style residences.
In addition, York helps students find off-campus housing. York’s Keele campus is fortunate to have two subway stops on campus, so housing does not necessarily need to be close to campus to reach campus easily.
The campus includes a small mall with some restaurants and a separate food court. Students can easily shop and find a variety of food choices without leaving campus.
York University Athletics
York’s varsity sports include football, soccer, rugby, and track & field. In addition to varsity sports, York has intramural sports where students in different faculties compete with one another. Students who just want to focus on personal fitness may join the fitness center for a low fee of $35/year.
